Top Copper Simon Nelson Honoured for Championing Disabled Officers

Superintendent Simon Nelson is making headlines as a leading voice for disabled police officers across the UK. As the disability lead for the Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA) and president of the National Disabled Police Association, Nelson has earned a prestigious award recognising his dedication to policing and disability advocacy.

A Hero Who Turned Hardship into Strength

Simon’s story is nothing short of inspirational. Diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2004, he underwent the complete removal of his stomach in 2006. Despite these massive health challenges, Simon has maintained a full operational career with Sussex Police, serving as a firearms commander and public order commander in some of the force’s toughest roles.

“I am both astounded and thrilled to receive this honour, especially during Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee,” Simon said. “I used to have little faith in the future, but it’s now even brighter, especially in my final year of policing.”

Championing Diversity and Inclusion Nationwide

Simon uses his national platform to push for broader diversity, equality, and inclusion in the police service. He advocates for colleagues with physical disabilities and raises awareness about neurodiversity. His efforts have led to a tripling in the number of PSA members identifying as disabled — a clear sign of the trust he has built.

He also dedicates time as a volunteer and advisory board member of Cancer Central UK, a charity supporting those affected by cancer.

Leaders Praise Simon’s Impact

Chief Constable Jo Shiner said, “I am absolutely delighted for Simon and very proud of him. His story inspires us all on how to overcome life’s challenges and use that strength to uplift others.”

PSA President Paul Fotheringham added, “Simon is a deserving recipient who has helped shape police policies on fitness testing, performance standards, and disability discrimination. His leadership improves our workforce and supports colleagues nationwide.”

Simon’s remarkable journey shines a spotlight on the resilience and dedication within the UK’s police family. His work continues to break down barriers and shape a more inclusive future for all officers.
