Rhys Hancock Jailed for Double Murder of Helen Hancock and Martin Griffiths
Rhys Hancock has been handed a life sentence at Derby Crown Court, with a minimum term of 31 years before parole can be considered. The grim discovery of Helen Hancock, 39, and Martin Griffiths, 48, was made by police in their Derby home on New Zealand Lane, Duffield, in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Both victims had suffered fatal stab wounds. Hancock, 40, of Portland Street, Etwall, was arrested at the scene and later charged with their murders. He admitted to the killings when he appeared in court back in July.
Judge Delivers Harsh Sentence in Heartbreaking Case
Her Honour Judge Nirmal Shant QC delivered a powerful sentencing speech. She said, “What you did that night has deprived two families of the people they love. No sentence I impose will seem adequate, and nothing can fill the void left by the deaths of Helen Hancock and Martin Griffiths.”
“Your actions left your three children without a mother and robbed Martin’s family of a son, and his children of a father.”
Community Mourns Beloved Couple
Detective Inspector Steve Shaw, leading the investigation, paid tribute to the victims. “Helen and Martin were incredibly popular and loved by their families, friends, neighbours, and colleagues,” he said.
“Their tragic deaths have devastated everyone who knew them.”
