Sir David Amess Killer Jailed for Life
Ali Harbi Ali, 26, from Kentish Town, NW5, has been handed a whole life order for murdering Sir David Amess. The fatal stabbing happened at a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, just after midday on 15 October 2021.
Planned Attack on MPs
During police interviews, Ali revealed he targeted Sir David because of the MP’s support for airstrikes in Syria. His terrorist plot stretched over two years, with Ali researching other politicians as possible victims. The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command uncovered hostile reconnaissance near Parliament and found CCTV of Ali visiting homes and surgeries of two other MPs in 2019.
Police also discovered attack plans, extremist content, and notes on Ali’s phone. He was convicted on 11 April for both murder and preparation of terrorist acts.
Heroic Police Stop Further Bloodshed
“Sir David’s family have shown tremendous courage since his murder,” said Met Police Assistant Commissioner Matt Jukes, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing. “The attack was stopped by two heroic Essex Police constables, who apprehended Ali while he was still armed with the knife. Their bravery, and that of members of the public who helped, undoubtedly prevented further harm.”
Jukes added, “This attack was an assault on democracy. The threat of terrorism remains very real, and we urge the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity. Your tip-off might just save lives.”
Family’s Heartbreaking Statement
“There is no elation in our family today,” said a statement from Lady Amess and Sir David’s family. “Our amazing husband and father was taken in a violent, appalling way. We will never get over this tragedy. David would have greeted his killer with a smile — how sickening what happened next was. It is beyond evil.”
The family thanked police, legal teams, friends, and the public for their support. They asked for privacy to grieve and made a plea: “Treat others with kindness, love, and understanding. This is needed now more than ever.”
