A man who walked into a police station and confessed to a murder that happened more than 40 years ago has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 19 years

Killer Confesses After 41 Years: Justice at Last for Anthony Bird

John Paul, 61, from Ladbroke Grove, Kensington, has finally been sentenced for the 1980 murder of Anthony “Tony” Bird. The Old Bailey handed down the verdict and sentence after decades of a cold case that shocked London.

Brutal Killing Left Tony Bound and Beaten

Tony Bird, 41, was found dead in his Kensington Gardens Square flat in June 1980. His body was bound with electrical cable, bruised, and battered. The flat was ransacked, with electrical goods and alcohol stolen.

Police launched a major murder investigation, but despite extensive forensic tests and numerous interviews, no suspect was found. The case went cold for 41 years—until May 2021.

Killer Walks into Police Station to Confess

In a stunning turn, John Paul walked into Hammersmith Police Station on 5 May 2021 and confessed to the murder. He was arrested and charged but initially pleaded not guilty.

At trial, evidence including Paul’s fingerprints found at the original crime scene sealed his fate. The jury convicted him of murder on 24 October, with sentencing following on 4 November.

Detective Praises Team and Seeks Closure for Family

“Paul’s sentence reflects the brutal nature of his crime,” said Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Reeves. “This vicious attack ended a young man’s life far too soon. Though we never gave up, it was Paul’s unexpected confession that finally brought justice for Tony’s loved ones.”

She added, “The streets are safer now. The team’s persistence over decades and their professional handling of Paul’s confession were crucial to this outcome.”

Tony’s family expressed mixed emotions: “We came to terms with Tony’s death many years ago but are relieved that after 42 years, his killer has been convicted. Sadly, Tony’s brother passed away last year, unable to witness this closure.”

The Night of the Murder

  • Paul and Tony met on the evening of 3 June 1980.
  • Paul intended to rob Tony’s flat.
  • He tied Tony up with cable and bludgeoned him unconscious with a piece of wood.
  • Later that night, Paul returned to steal valuables.

Finally, the long cold case has thawed, bringing peace to a grieving family and ending a terrifying chapter in Kensington’s history.
