Londoners got a blast from the past this week as the Galeón Andalucía, a stunning 15th-century Spanish galleon replica, sailed up the Thames in a rare spectacle. The majestic ship cruised past iconic London landmarks on Monday, September 23, before mooring at St Katharine Docks. In true pageantry, Tower Bridge swung open to let the giant through, thrilling onlookers.
Historic Ship Steals the Show on the Thames
The Galeón Andalucía is no ordinary vessel. It faithfully replicates the Spanish galleons that ruled the seas from the 15th to 18th centuries, ferrying merchants and goods between Europe, the Americas, and Asia. These ships were the workhorses of early global trade and exploration.
Built in 2009 by 128 master carpenters, this 55-metre, 500-tonne beauty blends traditional shipbuilding with modern tech. It’s crewed by 15 to 35 sailors who’ve taken her through the Red Sea, Pacific, and Indian Oceans – proving she’s seaworthy as ever.
