Top Cop Simon Harding Snags Senior Investigating Officer of the Year Award

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Harding has battled off stiff competition to be crowned Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) of the year. The award, handed out by the NPCC Homicide Working Group, celebrates the best in homicide and major crime investigations across UK police forces.

Leading Complex Cases with Distinction

Simon, based at New Scotland Yard, was presented with his award by Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy. The honour recognises his outstanding professionalism and leadership in handling some of the country’s toughest homicide investigations.

With nearly 30 years in policing, Simon has covered the full spectrum—from borough roles and cold case rape teams to Counter-Terrorism Command. He’s also served at three ranks within homicide teams, making him one of the Met’s most experienced SIOs.

High-Profile Terrorism and Murder Investigations

  • UK counter-terrorism SIO for the 2015 Tunisian museum attack that killed 22
  • Support for the Sousse beach terror attack, where 30 British tourists died
  • Led or overseen over 80 murder probes since joining the Met’s murder team in 2017
  • Cracked the 2017 Noel and Marie Brown double murders using familial DNA—shared findings at 2019 national SIO conference
  • 2019’s Operation Ridleypark: Found two decomposed women in a chest freezer; investigation secured a 38-year sentence despite no clear cause of death
  • Currently heading the high-pressure investigation into the 2020 stranger murders of sisters Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman

Grateful Hero Pays Tribute to Team

“I am truly honoured and humbled,” said Simon on receiving the award. “To be an SIO in the Met is an honour in itself, but to be a Homicide SIO is the pinnacle, and I cherish every minute.

“This recognition can only happen with a fantastic team behind you. I’m lucky to work with dedicated detectives and police staff who give everything for the families who have lost loved ones.”

Praise from the Top

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy applauded Simon’s leadership, saying: “You show tireless determination, constantly learning and sharing knowledge. You support your team and never lose sight of the impact murder investigations have on staff.

“You embody public service and compassion, especially towards bereaved families. Congratulations on a well-deserved award.”
