Teen Found Guilty of Stabbing Friend to Death in Croydon Park
A 17-year-old boy has been convicted of murdering Zaian and possessing a bladed weapon. The grim verdict came down at the Central Criminal Court on Friday, 14 April. Sentencing is set for Friday, 26 May at the same court.
Detective Slams ‘Horrific’ Attack on Unarmed Victim
Detective Sergeant Christina Clayton, Specialist Crime, said: “The motive for the horrific attack on Zaian has never been satisfactorily explained. Zaian was unarmed and wasn’t seeking any confrontation. His life was ended in a brief but deadly outburst of violence from the defendant; Zaian was but an unsuspecting victim.
His devastated family will continue to grieve the loss of his young life for many, many years to come. My thoughts, and that of my team, are with them today.”
Murder Investigation After Stabbing Near Ashburton Park
- On 30 December 2021, Zaian’s panicked friends flagged down police near Ashburton Park, Croydon shortly after 7pm.
- Officers found Zaian with stab wounds and gave first aid before the London Ambulance Service arrived.
- Despite efforts, Zaian was declared dead at the scene at 7.46pm.
- Specialist Crime detectives launched an immediate murder investigation.
Attack Was Brief but Fatal
Investigators revealed Zaian, then 15, was socialising with friends when he was confronted by the defendant, someone known to him. The suspect launched a sudden stabbing assault, landing three wounds before fleeing the scene.
A post-mortem on 1 January confirmed Zaian died from a stab wound to the heart. The teenage suspect was arrested later that day on suspicion of murder, charged, and remanded in custody.
