A 13-year-old boy has been charged over a series of mobility scooter thefts in Malmesbury. The teen is facing three counts of aggravated vehicle taking following the theft of three scooters in September 2022.
Teen Faces Court Over Mobility Scooter Thefts
The youngster, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is set to appear at Swindon Youth Court on January 17. The charges come after a police investigation into the stolen scooters, which targeted some of the town’s most vulnerable residents.
‘Hideous Crime’ Against Vulnerable Victims
Sergeant Jamie Ball said: “This was a hideous crime – targeting the most vulnerable members of our society and taking away what would likely have been the victim’s only mode of transport.”
He added: “I know the incidents caused upset and concern within the local community.”
Police Offer Reassurance to Victims
The force has kept all victims updated throughout the probe. Officers have even paid personal visits to ensure they’re aware of the progress.
“I hope this provides them with some reassurance that officers take reports of this nature seriously,” Sgt Ball said. “We will do all that we can to stamp out anti-social behaviour and criminal activity caused by young people within our community.”
