Teen Caught with Knuckle Duster, Knife and Fake ID Outside Brighton Football Match

A 16-year-old boy from Hove landed in hot water after being stopped by police at a football match in Brighton. He admitted to carrying an offensive weapon, a bladed article, a flare, and fake identity documents when he appeared at Worthing Youth Court on February 3.

Arrested Outside Brighton Football Game

Police approached a group of football fans on Queens Road, Brighton at around 5.30pm on January 14. When officers attempted to search the boy, he tried to run. He was quickly caught and arrested.

Charged and Sentenced

  • Possession of knuckle duster
  • Possession of lock knife
  • Possession of adult firework (flare)
  • Possession of articles for fraud (false driving licence and citizen card)

At court, the teen admitted all charges. He was given a Youth Referral Order, ordered to pay £40 costs and a £22 victim surcharge. The weapons, flare, and fake ID were seized and destroyed under a Deprivation Order.

Three-Year Football Banning Order

PC Darren Balkham, Sussex Police’s football officer, said: “This boy was swiftly arrested by officers before he could cause any harm. The football banning order severely restricts his ability to attend football matches both here in the UK and abroad.”

The banning order bars him from all regulated football matches in the UK and overseas for three years. He must surrender travel documents like passports or ID cards and cannot enter cities hosting England senior men’s team games eight hours before and after the match.

PC Balkham added: “This conviction sends a clear message that violence and disorder linked to football will not be tolerated.”
