Samantha Smith Back in Court After Violent Outburst
Samantha Smith, 31, appeared again at Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday after a shocking assault on a custody officer. The former Blantyre resident admitted attacking the officer while being taken to the cells in November last year.
Paedophile Convicted of Horrific Child Abuse
Smith was previously found guilty of molesting two young children in East Kilbride over several years starting in 2009. She preyed on a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl for three years. Despite her conviction, Smith defiantly claimed innocence outside court, telling Sheriff Douglas Brown:
“Paedophiles should be hung, not put in jail. If I’m a paedophile hang me.”
After the guilty verdict, she screamed, “I’m not a beast.”
Violent Attack on Custody Officer Lands Smith 5-Month Jail Term
Prosecutor Morag McLintock told the court Smith was “not happy” with the guilty verdict. When ordered removed from court, Smith swore at a custody officer, kicked her in the stomach, and struggled violently. The officer fell to the ground and had to be separated from Smith by colleagues.
Thankfully, the officer did not suffer any injury or require medical treatment.
Sheriff Brown handed Smith an immediate five-month jail sentence for the assault. Her earliest release date from the original three-year sentence is May next year.
