Fatal Hit-and-Run in Brixton Shocks Local Community

Serious Collision Investigation Unit detectives are hunting for witnesses after a deadly hit-and-run on Brixton Road.

Tragic Details of the Collision

At 6.49pm on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, emergency services raced to Brixton Road near Handforth Road, SW9, following a collision involving a tow truck and a pedestrian.

The victim, Safia Ali, a woman in her 50s, was struck by a tow truck that fled the scene without stopping. To make matters worse, seconds later she was hit again by a car. The driver of this second vehicle stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police.

Despite rapid response by London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, Ms Ali was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Her family has been informed and is receiving specialist support from police officers.

Police Arrest and Investigation Underway

A man has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop after the accident and causing death by dangerous driving. He has now been released on bail as inquiries continue.
