Bike Thief Jailed for Stabbing Cyclist in Nechells
A violent bike thief who stabbed a cyclist in the leg over a stolen bike demand has been locked up for four years. The attack happened on Cato Street North, Nechells, on Tuesday 18 August when 24-year-old Akiem Burton turned on his victim.
Stabbed for Refusing to Hand Over Bike
The cyclist, also 24, stopped to ask Burton for directions. But Burton lashed out, demanding the bike. When the man refused, Burton pulled a six-inch penknife and stabbed him in the thigh.
The victim collapsed, while passers-by shouted at Burton – who casually walked off. The cyclist needed hospital treatment but has since made a recovery.
Public Tips Lead to Arrest
Police scoured CCTV footage and released an image of the attacker, calling on the public for help. Several members of the public tipped off officers, leading to Burton’s arrest at a home near Telford, Shropshire.
Burton, from Nechells Park Road, Nechells, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm, attempted robbery, and possession of a weapon in public. Birmingham Crown Court sentenced him to four years behind bars.
Police Praise Public for Help
“None of this would have been achieved without a positive identification from a member of the public in response to this appeal,” said PC Kelly Brotherton of Force CID. “This was a completely unprovoked and vicious attack on a cyclist who had merely asked Burton for directions. Thankfully, with the public’s help, he’s now behind bars.”
