Stepdad and Mum Jailed Over Brutal Murder of Little Arthur
Thomas Hughes, 29, must serve at least 21 years for the manslaughter of his six-year-old son Arthur, who suffered an “unsurvivable brain injury” on June 16, 2020. The chilling case has shocked the nation.
Deliberate Cruelty to Inflict Maximum Pain
Judge Wall revealed Hughes had deliberately “researched pressure points” to cause Arthur the “maximum pain”. The boy endured horrific abuse at the hands of both Hughes and his stepmother Emma Tustin, 32.
Step-Mum Refuses to Face Court as She’s Locked Up for Murder
Tustin, found guilty of murdering Arthur after starving, poisoning, and abusing him, refused to approach the dock during sentencing at Coventry Crown Court. She was given a minimum 29-year jail term before she can even appeal.
The judge warned Tustin she could spend the rest of her life behind bars if parole is denied.
Judge Describes Abuse as ‘Sadistic’ and ‘Spiteful’
“Arthur was regularly beaten by both of you,” said Judge Wall. “Each was aware of what the other was doing.”
“This is one of the most distressing and disturbing cases I have ever dealt with. Neither defendant showed any remorse. Their behaviour was spiteful and sadistic.”
Shockingly, Tustin’s own two children lived a “perfectly happy life” just yards away from where Arthur suffered unthinkable torment.
During the trial, it emerged Arthur was poisoned with salt, routinely beaten, starved, deprived of water, and forced to stand alone in the hallway for hours.
The horrific abuse and neglect left a lasting scar on the community and serves as a grim reminder of the dangers some children face behind closed doors.
