Croydon Man Jailed for Rape and Assault After Courageous Victim’s Escape
A 30-year-old Croydon man was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of rape and causing actual bodily harm following a brutal eight-day trial at Guildford Crown Court.
Victim’s Bravery Leads to Arrest
Luke Sewell, from Westgate Road, Croydon, was arrested on 9 April after a woman bravely sought help at a London self-storage company. She told staff she had been raped and assaulted the previous day.
Using incredible courage, the woman convinced Sewell to drive her to the storage facility “to collect her belongings” as a clever ploy to get help. Thanks to the quick action of staff who kept her safe until police arrived, Sewell was promptly arrested the same day.
Harrowing Details of Abuse Revealed
The victim, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, revealed chilling details during the investigation. Sewell forced her to endure hours of torment, including an hour-long freezing cold shower, before raping her at a property in Dunsfold.
“I am still suffering with the injuries to my chest that Luke inflicted upon me. I can’t go to the gym because of my injuries. It was an important part of managing my MS and building my strength,” she revealed.
“What happened has made me develop habits like constantly proving to my new partner what I’m doing on my phone. I want to break this habit and stop feeling like I have to explain myself all the time.”
Police Praise Victim’s Courage as Sewell Gets 12 Years
Detective Constable Mike Powell, from the Sexual Offences Investigation Team, said: “The extreme violence and degradation Sewell inflicted led to his conviction. The victim’s courage to come forward and testify means a dangerous offender is now behind bars.”
Sewell was sentenced to 12 years in prison with an additional 3 years on licence due to the dangerous nature of his crimes. An indefinite restraining order was also granted.
His Honour Judge Rufus Taylor noted the victim endured “degradation and humiliation” and that the violence used by Sewell forced her submission to rape.
Surrey Police made it clear that serious sexual offences, whether in abusive relationships or not, will not be tolerated — sending a strong message to victims to come forward and offenders that justice will be served.
