CCTV Leads to Conviction in Shocking Edmonton Murder
Detectives cracked the case of a brutal killing in Edmonton using CCTV footage. Deka Omar, 24, was found guilty of murdering 58-year-old Susan Ioannou after a dramatic re-trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court. On June 6, Omar was sentenced to 23 years behind bars at Inner London Crown Court.
Victim’s Kindness Exploited in Home Attack
Detective Inspector Jim Barry described Susan as “kind and generous,” despite having little to give. Tragically, this kindness was exploited by Omar, who turned violently on Susan inside her own home. The attack was described as brutal, involving strangulation, stomping, and heavy blows to the face.
How the Investigation Unravelled
- The investigation began on February 21, 2022, after Susan’s body was found at her Church Street home with severe head, chest, and neck injuries.
- Police tracked Omar’s movements via CCTV to the victim’s address the night before the body was discovered.
- Omar had befriended Susan, exploiting her kindness to feed a drug addiction.
- Omar stole Susan’s phone before fleeing the scene.
Justice Served, But Impact Remains Devastating
After the attack, Omar contacted several people to check on Susan, even hinting something was wrong. She was arrested the very next day, on February 22, 2022, and charged with murder in February 2023.
“While murder is thankfully rare, its impact on loved ones is devastating,” said Detective Inspector Barry, paying tribute to Susan’s friends who helped bring the killer to justice.
