High Court Bid to Shut Epping’s Bell Hotel Over Asylum Seeker Row
Epping Forest District Council has launched a High Court showdown to close The Bell Hotel, which has been housing asylum seekers for weeks amid growing local uproar. Tensions have been mounting, sparking multiple protests outside the hotel.
Community on Edge After Multiple Demos
Legal papers filed in London’s High Court on Tuesday warn of a “clear risk of further escalating community tensions” and stress the urgent need to control the situation. Five demonstrations have taken place in the last month alone, with locals voicing fierce opposition.
The Bell sits near five schools and residential zones, intensifying fears among families and residents. Local leaders, including Council leader Kevin Bentley and Police and Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst, support action to resolve the crisis swiftly.
Protests Fuelled by Rising Crime Fears
The demonstrations have been marked by slogans like “No more silence – Government fail – we fight” and “Protect our community.” One protester told us, “Tensions will only get worse if the government keeps ignoring our pleas.” Concerns over a recent criminal case have fanned the flames of unrest.
Local Officials Demand Urgent Government Response
Whitbread, a community representative, warned that without government intervention, the situation could spiral further. “The authorities must listen now or face greater conflict,” he said.
