A lithium-ion battery in a vacuum cleaner sparked a fire that damaged part of a three-room flat on the second floor. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Blaze Breaks Out in East London Flat
Firefighters raced to the scene after the blaze broke out at 6.15pm. They had the fire under control by 6.56pm, preventing the flames from causing more damage.
Fire Brigade Issues Urgent Safety Warning
A Fire Brigade spokesperson warned about the risks of lithium-ion batteries. “Batteries can present a fire risk if they’re over-charged, short-circuited, submerged in water or damaged,” they said.
“It’s really important to protect them against being damaged and charge them safely. Unplug devices once they have finished charging and always make sure you use the right charger for your device.”
