Shock Resignation: Hampshire Police Chief Constable Scott Chilton Quits Amid Misconduct Probe

New Gross Misconduct Investigation Hits Chief Constable

Scott Chilton, the top cop at Hampshire Police, has resigned immediately after a fresh investigation into his personal conduct emerged. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched a probe into allegations of gross misconduct, focusing on a secret relationship formed during his two-year tenure, as well as an undisclosed past affair with a junior officer.

Chilton’s 33-year policing career is now under intense scrutiny. The chief previously faced an IOPC inquiry for failing to disclose a relationship during another officer’s misconduct hearing. Hampshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Donna Jones, confirmed Chilton’s exit and stated:

“The IOPC investigation will continue notwithstanding his retirement. As Commissioner, I will now start the process to recruit a new Chief Constable.”

Deputy Chief Takes the Helm as Acting Chief Constable

Deputy Chief Constable Sam de Reya steps up as Acting Chief after Chilton’s sudden departure. She assured both the force and public:

“We are here, first and foremost, to deliver exceptional policing for our communities, putting victims first and bringing offenders to justice.”

Affair Allegations Spark Entire Scandal

The investigation blew up after former detective DCI Roger Wood dropped a bombshell during his own misconduct hearing, accusing the chief constable of an affair:

“Well the chief constable had an affair.”

Hampshire Police promptly referred the matter to the IOPC. Chilton had earlier claimed to have the “full support” of the Police and Crime Commissioner but admitted the probe had a “personal impact” on his life and career. Despite insisting on leading the force through the inquiry, his resignation shows the pressure was too much.

Mixed Reactions as New Leadership Looms

  • Some officers voiced disappointment over Chilton’s exit.
  • Others called for tougher accountability at the top.
  • Public opinion on X (formerly Twitter) is split – some slam the secrecy, others praise his decades of service.

Donna Jones is now racing to find a new Chief Constable to steady the ship. The IOPC’s investigation will continue to decide if Chilton’s conduct crossed the line, even after his retirement.

Meanwhile, Acting Chief Constable Sam de Reya promises to keep Hampshire Police focused on public safety and cracking down on crime.
