Texting at the wheel deadlier than drink driving, warn cops
New research reveals that using your phone behind the wheel messes with your reactions more than driving over the alcohol limit. Shocking stuff as statistics show you’re twice as likely to die in a crash caused by texting than by drink driving.
Police crack down on fatal distractions
Hampshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police have teamed up for a new crackdown targeting drivers glued to their screens. Officers from the joint Roads Policing Unit will be hunting down anyone spotted using phones while driving — no excuses.
Road Safety Sergeant’s stark warning
“Most drivers are responsible and don’t use their mobile phone whilst driving, but the few that continue to take risks by texting, surfing the internet, or completing other tasks, are putting other road users and themselves at risk.”
“The distraction of your phone means you’re far less aware of what’s going on around you. You could miss vital road signs, struggle to keep your lane, or fail to maintain a steady speed.”
“Motorists are four times more likely to get in a crash when distracted by their phone, and your reaction times slow by 50%.”
“Think twice even before answering a call on hands free — it still distracts you. Never take your eyes off the road.”
“Challenge friends and family to ditch the phone while driving. It’s just not acceptable.”
