Heartless Thief Steals Widow’s Precious Wedding Gifts
A merciless crook snatched a gold ring and a St Christopher’s chain from an 83-year-old widow without her noticing. The woman was distracted by the thief, who handed her a fake birthday gift. Police later caught the culprit using DNA evidence and number plate cameras.
Devious Distraction on Radford Street
The victim was walking near Charles Avenue and Derby Road in Radford on the afternoon of Tuesday 14 July 2020 when 32-year-old Claudia Buncici struck. She approached the elderly woman, claiming it was her birthday, and gave her a suspicious package wrapped in sticky tape.
While the widow examined the “gift,” Buncici tried to steal her wedding ring but failed. However, she did manage to swipe another gold ring and the late husband’s St Christopher’s chain — priceless mementos from a 56-year marriage.
Evidence Cracks Case Wide Open
Police tracked down Buncici after DNA on the taped package matched her, and number plate recognition cameras linked her vehicle to the crime scene. She was arrested and charged with theft and attempted robbery.
Police Show Kindness Amidst Crime
Moved by the victim’s ordeal, the Radford police response team sent her flowers and a card signed by all 10 officers. The widow, who asked to remain anonymous, said:
“It made me very emotional but it was so sweet and kind of everyone. I felt honoured they had done that for me as it was over and above them doing their job.”
“The chain and ring taken were gifts from my husband. Both are irreplaceable.”
Jailed for Targeting Vulnerable Widow
Buncici, with no fixed address, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in Nottingham Crown Court on 12 November 2021. Detective Constable Gavin Harper said:
“Buncici preyed on this elderly woman’s vulnerability and kindness in carrying out her despicable crimes.”
“Now Buncici is behind bars, I hope she reflects on the immense pain she caused by stealing these sentimental items.”
