Hit-and-Run Driver Jailed After Dragging Motorcyclist 200m at 100mph

A reckless driver who hit a motorcyclist at over 100mph and dragged him along a busy carriageway has been locked up. Carla Russ, 27, from Greenhithe, sped along the A2 near Darenth in her Mercedes at dawn on 17 February 2018 before smashing into the rider and fleeing the scene without a second thought.

Terrifying Crash Causes Life-Altering Injuries

The motorcyclist was dragged nearly 200 metres down the road, suffering horrific injuries that left him hospitalised for three months. He has since undergone numerous painful operations and faces ongoing difficulties returning to work.

Bystanders rushed to aid the victim, but Russ vanished. Police tracked her down 36 hours later, but she refused to answer their questions.

Guilty Plea and Harsh Sentence

After being charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, failing to stop, and leaving the scene, Russ finally pleaded guilty at Woolwich Crown Court.

On 11 December 2019, she was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison, disqualified from driving for four years, and ordered to pay £1,000 compensation to her victim.

“The injuries that Russ inflicted on the motorcyclist were horrendous. He will never make a full recovery and has endured sustained, painful treatment as a result,” said PC Duncan Ford of Roads Policing Unit.

“Russ refused to admit what she had done until the last possible moment, depriving her victim of closure for nearly 20 months. I hope this custodial sentence brings some sense of justice.”
