Man Convicted of Fatal Hackney Stabbing of Derek Thomas
A man has been found guilty of murdering 53-year-old Derek Thomas in a chilling attack outside his home last summer.
Brutal Midnight Stabbing Caught on Camera
Kamar Williams, 34, from West Ferry Road, E14, was convicted today at the Old Bailey following a three-week trial. The court heard Williams fatally stabbed Derek Thomas just after 11pm on 30 July 2024 outside his home on Benthal Road, N16.
Williams had a past relationship with Derek’s daughter and sent her threatening texts that night warning her to “watch this space.” CCTV footage showed Williams loitering by the victim’s house wearing distinctive reflective trainers before stabbing Derek in a brutal and premeditated attack. He fled the scene in a grey van moments later.
Manhunt Catches Fugitive After Key Evidence Found
- Emergency services were called at 23:04 but Derek died at the scene despite paramedics’ efforts.
- Police found the grey van abandoned on 1 August in Langford Close, E8, with Williams’ bank card inside.
- Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) placed the van between the crime scene and Williams’ home several times.
- Williams sought medical help for a 5cm cut on his left knee the day after the stabbing, likely linked to the attack.
- He fled a police stop in a silver BMW on 3 August, prompting a wider search.
- Williams was finally arrested near Notting Hill Carnival on 26 August 2024 and charged the next day.
Detective Inspector John Marriott, leading the investigation, said: “This was a brutal and premeditated attack on a much-loved father. Kamar Williams showed clear intent that night… and carried out this senseless act of violence.”
Family Pay Heartfelt Tribute to Derek Thomas
Derek’s family described him as the “life and soul” of their household. In court, they said:
“Derek will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His passing has left a massive hole in the lives of his wife, children, grandchildren, and all who knew him. He was greatly loved by all and will never be forgotten.”
