Man Jailed for Brutal Newham Acid Attack
A thug who doused two victims with a powerful corrosive substance has been locked up for 16 years at Snaresbrook Crown Court. John Tomlin, 25, from Colman Road, E16, pleaded guilty last November to two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent after unleashing a terrifying acid attack in broad daylight.
Horrific Attack on Tollgate Road
On the morning of 21 June 2017, Tomlin got into a heated argument with a 37-year-old man on the pavement near Tollgate Road. When the man returned to his car, Tomlin hurled a corrosive liquid through the passenger window, hitting a 21-year-old woman inside. Screaming in agony, the woman suffered severe burns as the acid ate through her skin and clothes.
Not done, Tomlin ran around the car and threw more acid through the driver’s window, blinding the man temporarily. The driver tried to escape but was forced off the road in a crash after the acid attack left him disoriented. The corrosive substance was so potent it melted the car’s seats and dashboard.
Victims Fight for Recovery
Both victims suffered terrible burns requiring plastic surgery and ongoing treatment. A passer-by transported them to a nearby East London hospital after witnessing the crash.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest
Newham detectives launched a manhunt and caught Tomlin just weeks later when he handed himself in, admitting to living rough in Epping Forest to avoid capture. He was charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent and sentenced to 16 years’ prison, plus an extended four-year licence, with a minimum two-thirds term to serve.
Detective Sergeant Dion Brown said: “This was a vicious attack that left two victims with injuries they will carry for life. The acid used was as powerful as hydrochloric acid. Acid attacks cause horrific and painful damage – those responsible face severe consequences.”
Justice has been served for this shocking acid assault, sending a strong message that such violent crimes will not be tolerated.
