Man Jailed for Brutal Murder of Hotel Porter in Edinburgh
A violent love triangle ended in tragedy as Sam Atkins, 29, was handed an 18-year prison sentence for murdering a hotel porter in Edinburgh.
Jealous Rage Sparks Deadly Stabbing
Atkins appeared in Glasgow’s High Court, admitting murder and two assaults on his ex-partner, Raehanna Cameron, after she ended their relationship. Enraged by the split, Atkins attacked Cameron and her friend Charles Paul, who tried to protect her.
The fatal blow came in March 2023 inside a flat on Granton Crescent. Charles Paul, 69, a night porter at Edinburgh’s Bruntsfield Hotel, was stabbed at least 22 times. His horrific death shocked the local community.
Protective Friend Pays the Ultimate Price
Paul had a close bond with Cameron through her late father, pledging to look out for her after her dad passed away. On the day of the attack, Atkins was found lurking in Cameron’s hallway armed with two knives, forcing her to lock herself away for safety.
Police discovered Paul unresponsive in a bedroom, surrounded by blood. He had suffered multiple stab wounds and other injuries. Cameron had earlier placed Atkins’ belongings outside her flat, signalling the end of their troubled relationship.
Defence Claims No Memory, But Judge Sends Clear Message
Atkins’ defence lawyer, Ronnie Renucci KC, claimed Atkins was intoxicated and had no recollection of the murder. “He struggles to accept responsibility,” Renucci said, “and does not recognise himself in these crimes.”
Lord Clark ruled Atkins must serve at least 18 years before parole can be considered. Police Scotland called the sentence a step towards justice, offering some solace to Paul’s family.
Detective Chief Inspector George Calder said, “These were despicable and callous acts carried out by Atkins, who showed an utter disregard for the life of Charles Paul or for the woman he seriously assaulted.”
