Off-Duty Cops Stop Knife Attack in South London
A gang of off-duty police officers sprang into action to stop a knife-wielding attacker from seriously harming a man in south London. Their quick thinking and bravery prevented what could have been a deadly incident.
Knife-Wielding Joseph Jimenez Sentenced
Joseph Jimenez, 20, from Baxter Road N1, was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on 14th February after pleading guilty to possession of a knife and affray. He received eight months for knife possession and four months for affray, served concurrently at a young offenders’ institute.
Off-Duty Officers Spot Violent Brawl
The drama unfolded on 21st July 2023. Officers from the Central South Command Unit’s Gangs & Pro-Active Team were off-duty, relaxing in Elephant Park, SE17, when they noticed a violent fight nearby.
- Two groups were involved in a scuffle.
- One man was hit over the head and bitten by a dog.
- Another man repeatedly tried to slash the victim with a large knife.
Heroic Intervention Without Backup
Despite being off-duty and without protective gear or police radios, the officers acted fast. They rushed in, separated attacker from victim, cornered the suspect, and arrested him on the spot.
“Their swift intervention likely stopped the chaos from turning into a full-blown public disorder,” said Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, lead for policing in Southwark and Lambeth.
The victim was given first aid by the officers before being taken to hospital. Thanks to the brave off-duty cops, the victim avoided serious injury.
Detective Inspector Jon Summers praised their courage, saying: “They showed exceptional dedication protecting the public, even off-duty and without proper equipment.”
The Metropolitan Police Service hailed the officers’ selfless actions as a shining example of true policing spirit.
