Cold Case Killer Gets Life: Allen Morgan Sentenced for 1981 Murder

Allen Morgan, 74, was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 22 years today at Luton Crown Court. He was found guilty of conspiracy to murder Carol Morgan after a brutal attack in 1981, ending a cold case that haunted authorities for over 40 years.

Brutal Attack and Chilling Motive

Carol Morgan was savagely killed on 13 August 1981. Evidence showed Allen not only plotted the murder but also profited financially from it. Despite living on the south coast with Carol’s children and his mistress Margaret—who was later cleared of involvement—Allen escaped justice for decades.

Decades-Long Investigation Ends in Justice

  • Detective Superintendent Carl Foster led the cold case team that cracked the case.
  • New witness testimony revealed Allen had tried to hire someone to kill Carol.
  • Original investigators in the 1980s collected key evidence, but no one was prosecuted until now.

“Allen Morgan’s actions have caused irreparable damage to those who knew and loved Carol. Now facing his latter years, he will finally pay the price for cutting short an innocent life,” said Detective Superintendent Carl Foster.

CPS and Police Praise Teamwork Across Generations

Retired Detective Chief Superintendent Brian Prickett praised the collaboration between 1980s detectives and the modern cold case unit.

“This case has been a story of two generations of policing coming together. No murder investigation is ever closed, no matter how much time has passed.”

Crown Prosecutor Shan Saunders added:

“After living a lie for decades, Allen Morgan will almost certainly spend the rest of his life in prison. This case relied heavily on witness accounts, including a new witness who heard Morgan plotting the murder. It proves police and prosecutors will bring offenders to justice, no matter how long ago the crime was committed.”

Justice has finally been served for Carol Morgan, giving her family and friends a long-awaited sense of closure.
