Southwick Rapist Shaun Clarke Gets 24 Years for Brutal Abuse
Gruesome Crimes Uncovered at Southwick Home
A Southwick man, Shaun Clarke, 53, has been slammed with a 24-year prison sentence after being convicted of repeated rape and assaults on a woman over several years. On 18 October 2023, police were called to Clarke’s property following reports he was aggressively demanding money and trying to force entry.
Officers spoke to the victim at the scene, who bravely revealed a horrific trail of physical and sexual abuse. Clarke controlled her every move, isolating her from friends, and unleashed brutal attacks whenever he disapproved.
Children Witnessed Horrifying Abuse
Some of Clarke’s savage violence was witnessed by the victim’s young children, adding a chilling layer to this nightmare. The victim, a woman in her 40s, endured relentless torment and financial demands, culminating in the emergency call that led to Clarke’s arrest.
Violence Extended to Police on Arrest
When arrested later that day, Clarke didn’t stop. He assaulted a female police officer, injuring her hand, before being charged with five counts of rape, two counts of assault, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assaulting an emergency worker.
Justice Served at Lewes Crown Court
On 12 July at Lewes Crown Court, Clarke was sentenced to 19 years behind bars plus 5 years on licence. He also received an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and Restraining Order.
Detective Constable Rachel Hilton said: “Shaun Clarke subjected his victim to torment and abuse, the effects of which will last a lifetime. The fact that young children witnessed his horrific behaviour proves how abuse can trap innocent people in its orbit.”
“I thank the victim and her family for their bravery. They have helped put a dangerous man behind bars. We will do everything to protect women and girls, ensuring offenders face justice. If you are a victim of sexual or violent crime, please report it to the police.”
