Met Police Reopen Probe Into Wimbledon Land Rover Tragedy
The Metropolitan Police have launched a fresh investigation into the horrific Land Rover crash that killed two eight-year-old girls at The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon. This move comes after a review uncovered major failings in the original inquiry.
Crash Details and Initial Investigation Flaws
On 6 July 2023, a Land Rover Defender, driven by 47-year-old Claire Freemantle, ploughed through a fence during an end-of-year tea party, instantly killing Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau. At first, police did not press charges, accepting that Freemantle suffered a first-time epileptic seizure behind the wheel. But a Scotland Yard review has since revealed serious errors, including a rushed epilepsy diagnosis without brain scans and missed witness interviews that could have offered vital clues.
Families Demand Answers as New Team Takes Over
“No parent should ever have to go through the pain my wife and I have experienced,” said Nuria’s father, Saj Butt. “The initial investigation left so many unanswered questions. We welcome this new probe with a specialist team. It might not bring Nuria back, but we need to know the truth.”
Selena’s mother, Jessie Deng, added, “The families have been left in limbo. All we wanted was a thorough, open investigation. We hope this nightmare will finally end.”
Wider Impact and Ongoing Appeal for Witnesses
Besides the tragic deaths of Nuria and Selena, nine children and three adults were seriously injured in the crash. The Metropolitan Police have appointed a senior investigating officer with homicide experience to lead the reopened case.
A spokesperson for the Met said, “We are committed to answering all questions raised by the families affected.” Detectives are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or its aftermath to come forward.
