Brighton Man Convicted of Child Sexual Offences
Callum Thewlis, 24, from Brighton, has been convicted over sexual offences involving a teenage girl. Thewlis faced two charges of raping a girl aged 13 to 15 and two charges of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl in the same age group.
Crime Dates Back to 2018
The case began after a teenage girl reported being raped twice in 2018. Specialist officers supported her, leading to a detailed investigation. Thewlis, who was 17 at the time, was arrested in February 2018.
At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on February 16, 2023, Thewlis pleaded not guilty to rape but admitted to the penetrative sexual activity charges.
Jury Clears Rape Charges, Sentencing Set
On November 10, at Lewes Crown Court, a jury acquitted Thewlis of both rape charges. However, he remains convicted of the other offences and will be sentenced on December 20, with the court venue yet to be confirmed.
Detective Urges Victims to Speak Out
“This conviction will rightly see Callum Thewlis face justice for his crimes, but his victim will live with the impact for the rest of her life,” said Detective Sergeant Gemma Holley.
“I want to thank her for the bravery and strength she showed by coming forward and supporting our investigation. Without her, this result wouldn’t have been possible.”
“If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual offences, report it to the police online or via 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.”
