Stockport Man Jailed Over Shocking Abuse Spree

Benjamin Carlin, 43, from Stockport, has been locked up for two years and one month. He’s also hit with a 10-year restraining order after pleading guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour at Croydon Crown Court on 17 March.

Victim Breaks Silence on Nightmare Relationship

Carlin’s terrifying side came to light when Surrey Police used Clare’s Law to meet a woman in August 2025. She revealed a harrowing tale of control and threats that left her scared and stuck.

She told officers that ignoring Carlin’s calls sparked violent abuse. He frequently threatened to kill her and her family—and warned he’d end his own life if she tried to leave.

Threats, Harassment and a Dramatic Arrest

The abuse ramped up on 13 August 2025. Carlin accused the woman of ignoring him and threatened to strangle her if she didn’t obey. He bombarded her with over 10 calls during a police call, demanding proof of her whereabouts.

Police then coordinated with West Midlands officers to arrest Carlin, who was out of town. He pleaded guilty on the morning of his trial, sealing his grim fate.

Victim Praises Clare’s Law for Saving Her Life

“If Clare’s Law hadn’t been applied, I’d probably still be with Ben, lying to myself that there would ever be a safe time to leave. There never was. I’m proud I stood up for myself — for me, for other women in similar situations, and for the woman whose tragic death made Clare’s Law possible. Thanks to Surrey Police’s help, I believe I have my life back and cannot thank you enough.”

Detective Charlotte Barrett hailed the victim’s bravery and urged others to speak out:

“Coercive and controlling behaviour aims to dominate someone’s life through abuse and intimidation. This case only surfaced because of the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme. If you’re worried about someone’s behaviour in a relationship, make a referral or an application for a friend or family member — it could save a life. When you report domestic abuse to us, you will be listened to and supported.”
