New Royal Navy Boss Takes Helm Aboard Historic HMS Victory
Admiral Sir Ben Key has officially taken over as First Sea Lord from Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, stepping up aboard Nelson’s iconic flagship, HMS Victory. Radakin’s 29-month reign ends as he prepares to become the new Chief of Defence Staff.
Command of 30,000 Sailors and a Mighty Fleet
Sir Ben now commands over 30,000 Royal Navy personnel, more than 90 warships including nuclear subs, support vessels, Fleet Air Arm helicopters and jets, plus the elite Royal Marines. He’s no stranger to leadership, having served as Chief of Joint Operations and Fleet Commander.
Next-Gen Frigates Set to Lead the Fleet
During his tenure, Admiral Key will oversee the launch of cutting-edge warships like the submarine hunter HMS glasgow/" title="Glasgow" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Glasgow, the lead of eight Type 26 frigates, and HMS Venturer, the first Inspiration-class/Type 31 vessel. He’s charged with continuing the naval revolution started by his predecessor—modernising the fleet for 21st-century challenges.
Historic Handover Ceremony on HMS Victory
The formal handover took place in HMS Victory’s grand cabin before moving to the quarterdeck, where Admiral Radakin’s standard was lowered and Admiral Key’s flag raised in a symbolic passing of the torch.
“It’s been a real privilege to have led the Royal Navy. I am so grateful to all the amazing women and men who serve and support us and what we have achieved together despite the pandemic,” said Admiral Radakin.

Admiral Key’s Impressive Naval Resume
Admiral Key’s career highlights include qualifying as both helicopter crew and Principal Warfare Officer, commanding four ships including aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, and serving as Flag Officer Sea Training, Fleet Commander, and Chief of Joint Operations.
