Chinese Crime Gang Boss Jailed for Running Brothel Empire Across UK
Gang Leader Dongning Zhang Behind Nationwide Brothel Ring
Dongning Zhang, 35, from Marylebone, London, has been locked up for four years and three months. He led a ruthless Chinese crime group running multiple brothels, including in Kent. Zhang pled guilty to controlling prostitution and money laundering as police cracked down on the illegal operation.
His wife, Shuangyan Hu, 37, of Harrow, was his second-in-command. Arrested during a raid, she was caught with £8,000 cash. Despite pleading not guilty, Hu was convicted at Maidstone Crown Court and sentenced to three and a half years behind bars.
Boastful Couple Busted by Mobile Phone Evidence
The couple’s mobile phones revealed brazen boasts about their vast wealth and chilling details of exploiting women for profit. The gang showed zero regard for the vulnerable women caught up in their cruel racket.
Manager and Henchman Kai Shao Jailed for Prostitution Racketeering
Kai Shao, 62, from Tunbridge Wells, took instructions from Zhang and managed two brothels raided in Tunbridge Wells. Shao collected cash from sex workers, acted as security, and even cooked at the premises. He admitted controlling prostitution and money laundering, receiving a one year and eight months prison sentence.
Police Raid Multiple Brothels, Seize Cash and Evidence
- Officers raided a Tunbridge Wells brothel in May 2018, arresting Shao and finding a sex worker.
- A second brothel was raided in July 2018 where £1,500 cash and sex trade items were seized.
- Two phones recovered contained contacts linked directly to Zhang, known as ‘Leo’ to his gang.
Zhang avoided arrest for months but was finally nabbed in London in December 2018. Police found £8,000 cash and detailed sales ledgers at his London home.
Detective’s Warning on Exploitation and Human Trafficking
“People who run brothels prey on the most vulnerable members of society with little regard for their safety or welfare,” said Detective Sergeant Kris Eberlein.
“Brothels are often linked to people-trafficking and modern slavery. Victims are trapped in dangerous, unfamiliar environments far from home.”
“Zhang, Hu, and Shao had no legitimate explanation for the huge sums of money uncovered. Their convictions send a strong message to anyone exploiting others in this cruel trade.”
