Brutal Triple Stabbing Shocks Houghton Regis Community

Two men have been found guilty over a savage triple stabbing that left two dead and a third fighting for life in a “scene of utter devastation.”

Nicholas Papworth and Anthony Bennison Convicted

Nicholas Papworth, 33, and Anthony Bennison, 25, were today (Monday) convicted of 12 crimes, including three counts of murder following the horrific attack in Houghton Regis last November.

The victims – Adam Fanelli, 39, and Patrick Howard, 27 – were stabbed to death. A third man, also seriously injured, remains in hospital.

From Pub Spat to Bloodbath on the Streets

The chaos began after a fight at a local pub involving Papworth and another man. Later, Bennison, driving a silver BMW, chased the group on foot down Drury Lane.

  • Bennison used his car to ram the victims, forcing them to defend themselves with wood and debris.
  • When the group escaped down an alley, they ran into Fanelli who came out to investigate the noise.
  • Bennison and Papworth reunited and launched a terrifying follow-up attack on Tithe Farm Road.

The court described the stabbing spree as “utterly senseless and at a level that was truly incredible.”

Attack Details Revealed in Court

  • Bennison stabbed Fanelli twice in the chest with no signs of defensive wounds.
  • The third victim was stabbed eight times in the back and neck while trying to shield Fanelli.
  • Bennison then stabbed Howard from behind, severing his spinal cord, causing instant paralysis.
  • Before fleeing, Bennison kicked Howard in the head as he lay helpless.
  • Papworth drove his Volkswagen Golf over Howard, killing him instantly, while the other injured victim tried in vain to help.

Afterwards Bennison abandoned his BMW in north London, and Papworth set his car ablaze near Luton in a bid to destroy evidence.

Verdict and Reactions

Bennison was found guilty of multiple offences but cleared on three counts of attempted murder and two of attempted GBH. Papworth was found guilty of murder of Howard but acquitted of Fanelli’s murder and other charges.

Two other men charged earlier were released with no further action.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Khanna said: “The level of violence and the injuries sustained in this attack are truly deplorable. Our thoughts remain with the families and the surviving victim who will carry these scars for life.

“I hope today’s verdict brings some reassurance that justice will be served. The bravery of witnesses and the hard work of our officers ensured this result.

“This horrendous crime has left a deep scar on a tight-knit community. We call on everyone to help ensure Houghton Regis never suffers such senseless violence again.”

Sentencing is set for Thursday 3 August.
