Tragic Girl, 11, Dies After Poison Gas From Neighbour’s Bedbug Treatment
Toxic Fumes Drifted Into Home
A young girl from Shadwell, east London, has died following accidental exposure to deadly chemicals aimed at killing bedbugs. Eleven-year-old Fatiha Sabrin was overcome by poisonous phosphine gas that leaked into her flat from the downstairs apartment.
The hazardous gas was released after Jesmin Akter, 33, used aluminium phosphide pellets three times over to tackle a severe bedbug problem in her home. Moisture in the air triggered the pellets to emit toxic fumes, which drifted upstairs where Fatiha lived.
Schoolgirl Suffers Cardiac Arrest, Dies Days After Birthday
Fatiha collapsed after inhaling the gas on November 26, 2021. She suffered cardiac arrest and tragically passed away on December 11 – just a day after celebrating her 11th birthday.
The promising schoolgirl had been full of life and dreamed of becoming a doctor.
Neighbour Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter
At the Old Bailey, Akter admitted manslaughter but denied illegally importing the toxic substance without a licence. The judge warned she could still face trial over that charge. Akter was released on bail ahead of further hearings.
