Hampshire Hit Hard by Courier Fraud Scammers

Courier fraudsters are on the prowl, targeting vulnerable victims by pretending to be police officers or bank staff. Their ploy? Pressure people into making snap financial decisions during fake investigations.

In 2021 alone, a staggering 110 victims in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight lost nearly £787,000 to these scams. Across the UK, 3,625 people were conned out of more than £15.2 million.

City of London Police Launches New Campaign

Hampshire Constabulary has thrown its weight behind a fresh campaign by City of London Police to tackle this growing menace. To raise awareness, the City of London has revealed four sneaky tactics the fraudsters use:

Four Tricks Fraudsters Use to Steal Your Cash

  1. Bank card expiry trick: Scammers claim your card is invalid and ask for your PIN. A “courier” is sent to collect your card, which is then used fraudulently.
  2. High-end purchases: Pretending to be cops, they get victims to buy expensive watches, jewellery, or gold, which are then handed over to criminals.
  3. Counterfeit cash “investigation”: Victims are told to withdraw large sums for police checks on fake banknotes. Couriers collect the cash under this false pretense.
  4. Computer takeover: Fraudsters pose as internet providers, convincing victims to install remote access software. They then claim the victim has been overpaid compensation, coaxing them to withdraw money that couriers pick up.

Police Warn: Elderly at Greatest Risk

“These fraudsters are heartless individuals who prey on some of the most vulnerable people in our community,” said Detective Inspector Mark Carter of Hampshire’s Serious & Organised Crime Unit.

“Victims are generally aged 70 to 89, with women more frequently targeted. We urge everyone with elderly relatives or friends to warn them about these scams.”

“Knowing the tricks used and spotting warning signs could stop someone falling victim. We’re determined to put an end to this evil scam and bring the criminals to justice.”
