Gunfire and Arson Spark Major Police Hunt in Edinburgh
Edinburgh is in shock after a string of serious crimes, including gunshots fired in residential areas and a suspicious blaze, sparked a massive Police Scotland operation. Officers are hunting those behind what is believed to be gang-related violence tearing through the city.
Police Ramp Up Patrols and Investigations
The crime spree unfolded over Thursday and Friday (March 20–21), prompting a rapid and robust response. A specialist investigation team, backed by divisional and expert units, is combing CCTV footage and conducting door-to-door enquiries in hotspots like Ferry Road, Niddrie, and Pennywell.
Saturday saw targeted road and vehicle checks as officers boosted high-visibility patrols, with more planned in the coming days.
Superintendent Paul Gillespie said: “We are pursuing those involved and using every tool at our disposal. Additional officers are out in force to reassure the public and disrupt criminal activity.”
Linked Firearms and Suspicious Fire Raise Alarm
The violence escalated with gunfire reports last week followed by a suspicious fire in Hay Drive on Sunday morning. Police suspect the arson is linked to the earlier shootings.
“Our investigations suggest these incidents involve groups targeting each other,” added Superintendent Gillespie, confirming fears of inter-gang warfare.
Specialist Units Join the Fray
The Specialist Crime and Operational Support Divisions have stepped in to assist local officers tackling this complex and evolving threat. Police Scotland has also upped street presence to deter trouble and reassure worried residents.
Community on Edge as Violence Mounts
The spate of incidents is rattling locals, who took to social media to express their fears. One X user warned, “Police are continuing to appeal following several linked fires and shooting incidents. People are worried — this isn’t normal.” Another blasted the turmoil as a “gang war in our city,” reflecting growing concerns over escalating violence in Edinburgh’s neighbourhoods.
Call for Help: Police Urge Witnesses to Step Up
Police Scotland is appealing for anyone with information, CCTV, or dashcam footage from the affected areas to come forward. The force stresses public cooperation is vital to cracking the case.
- Contact Police Scotland on 101 with the incident reference.
- Or report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police Pledge Unrelenting Action
“We understand the concern and fear these incidents cause. We will not tolerate this level of violence in our communities and are working tirelessly to hold those responsible to account,” Superintendent Gillespie vowed.
Edinburgh’s streets remain on high alert as the hunt continues. The city demands peace—and Police Scotland is cracking down hard.
