Police Race to Crack Writtle Pub Stabbing Tragedy

Detectives are working round the clock after a 19-year-old man was fatally stabbed outside the Rose and Crown pub in Writtle on Friday night. The victim, provisionally named as Liam Taylor from Chelmsford, was attacked alongside another man in what police are calling a targeted assault.

Two Arrested Over Brutal Attack

On Sunday, police arrested two men from Chelmsford’s The 1 area. An 18-year-old was held on suspicion of murder and possession of a weapon, while a 21-year-old faces charges of murder and attempted murder. Both suspects have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Heavy Police Presence and Stop-and-Search Powers Deployed

Officers have increased patrols across Chelmsford, especially in Melbourne and Springfield estates. Tough stop-and-search authorisations under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 are in effect until Tuesday afternoon. This allows searches without suspicion to root out dangerous weapons and keep residents safe.

Police Urge Public to Stay Alert and Speak Up

“I want to thank Chelmsford residents for their support throughout this investigation,” said Chief Superintendent Andy Mariner. “Our officers are working tirelessly, and your information is key.”

“Please approach officers with any concerns. The Section 60 power was not taken lightly but is essential to deter weapon-carrying suspects. I urge everyone to carry on with their daily lives and stay safe.”

Anyone with information about the January 31 stabbing is urged to contact the North Major Crime Team on 101.
