Fatal Crash on M606: Three Dead After Van and Taxi Collide

A deadly smash involving a van and a taxi rocked the M606 near Chain Bar roundabout at 10.45pm last night. Tragedy struck on impact, with three people confirmed dead.

Victims Named: Taxi Driver and Passengers Die at Scene and Hospital

  • The taxi driver, 28, and his 49-year-old passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
  • An 18-year-old male passenger from the van later died in hospital this morning.

A 17-year-old boy, also in the van, is receiving treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the 15-year-old van driver—the youngest involved—was arrested on suspicion of causing death by reckless driving but remains in hospital with injuries.

Van Drove Wrong Way After Alleged Theft

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) revealed the van, suspected to be stolen, was seen driving the wrong way around a roundabout moments before smashing into the taxi. Police did not follow the van onto the motorway.

“Three people were killed following the incident on the M606, near the Chain Bar roundabout, at approximately 10.45pm last night,” an IOPC spokesperson said.

“The van entered the motorway traveling in the wrong direction, causing the collision with the taxi.”

Investigation Underway Into Deadly Crash

IOPC Regional Director Thea Walton expressed sympathy and promised a thorough probe:

“This was a tragic incident that resulted in three people losing their lives. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”

“We know the community is worried. We will carry out a full, independent investigation to find out exactly what happened.”

“Families will be contacted shortly to explain our role and next steps.”

The IOPC is currently gathering police accounts and reviewing video footage. Two other people from the crash remain in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
