Teen Murdered on VE Day: Killer Caught After 13-Day Search
Sixteen-year-old Louise was reported missing on Friday 8 May. Her body was found 13 days later in woodland at Havant Thicket. Winchester Crown Court heard that 30-year-old Shane Mays murdered her that same afternoon before dumping her phone nearby.
Killer Tried to Cover Tracks with Lies
Mays was arrested after a major police search and charged with Louise’s murder. He admitted causing her death and pled guilty to manslaughter but denied murder. The case went to trial on 16 November.
Prosecutor James Newton-Price QC told the court: “May 8th was VE Day, a public holiday during early lockdown with socially-distanced street parties. Louise vanished sometime after 12.49pm—the last time her phone sent a message. There’s no CCTV of her that day. She never came home.”
Mays lied about his involvement, claiming he walked Louise to a skate park that day. Just before trial, he admitted playing a part in her death but denied murder.
Jury Unanimous: Mays Guilty of Murder
After just two hours of deliberation, the jury found Mays guilty of murder.
“Louise was just 16 when Shane Mays took her life — a terrible tragedy,” said Detective Inspector Adam Edwards, who led the investigation.
“She was known for her kindness and bright smile. The entire Hampshire Constabulary team worked relentlessly to bring justice.”
“Thanks also to the Leigh Park community for their support throughout.”
Family Speak Out: Heartbroken Parents Pay Tribute
Louise’s mother, Rebecca Cooper, said: “No words can describe the loss we feel every day. She was our sunshine and is deeply missed by all who knew her. The past months have been traumatising. We thank the police and legal team and ask to be left to grieve.”
Her father, Bradley Smith, added: “Louise was cherished and loved. We dreamed of giving her happy lives with holidays, laughs, and milestones. Losing her has ripped our family apart. Please respect our privacy during this heartbreaking time.”
Shane Mays, from Leigh Park, will be sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on 9 December.
