Two Dead After Boat Capsizes at Roadford Lake

Tragedy struck at Roadford Lake near Okehampton on Wednesday, June 8, when a boat capsized at around 1.30pm. Emergency services rushed to the scene following the distress call.

Bodies Recovered and Identified

On Thursday afternoon, police recovered the bodies of two people from the lake. They were later identified as Alex Wood, 43, and Alison Tilsley, 63, both from West Devon.

Specially trained officers are now supporting the grieving families.

“We are totally devastated by the loss of our beautiful Ali,” said Ali’s family in a statement. “She was the sweetest, most loving daughter, sister, and auntie. Everyone who ever met her adored her.”

“Her bright personality, positivity, fantastic sense of humour, and way with words will be sorely missed. Our hearts will forever be broken, but the messages of love and support we have received have brought us great comfort.”

“We respectfully request privacy during this difficult time.”

Others Injured and Hospitalised

Two more people were pulled from the water and taken to Derriford Hospital. One has been discharged. However, a woman in her fifties remains in critical condition.

Additionally, two individuals were treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being released.

Ongoing Investigation into Capsize

Devon and Cornwall Police are working alongside the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) to probe the exact cause of the incident. The investigation is ongoing as authorities piece together how the tragedy unfolded.
