Met Legend Maggie Price Honoured for 50+ Years of Service!

A true police veteran, Maggie Price has clocked over half a century with the Met, earning praise from none other than Commissioner Cressida Dick. Starting as a 19-year-old recruit in 1969, Maggie’s journey through the ranks is a tale of grit, change, and dedication.

From Skirts and Capes to Detective Expertise

Back in the day, female officers like Maggie wore tight knee-length skirts, capes, and even carried handbags as part of their uniform. The 1970s weren’t easy for women on the beat – male colleagues often treated them with awkward protectiveness. Maggie recalls being told to avoid entering pubs while breaking up fights on her Bow Street patrol.

First Aid Star and Youth Advocate

Not just a copper on the streets, Maggie became a first aid instructor, helping officers hone lifesaving skills. Her efforts propelled the Met to win the national police first aid competition three times in the ’70s and ’80s. She even bagged the best individual award in 1979.

Her dedication didn’t stop at first aid. Maggie spent years building relationships with young people, liaising with schools in Paddington, visiting young offenders, and working alongside social services – proving her community spirit beyond the call of duty.

Detective, Vetting Expert & Lifetime Achievement Nominee

From 1988, Maggie shifted gears to detective constable work in the National Identification Service, becoming the go-to expert on foreign convictions across UK police forces. Even after retiring from active duty, she continued as a core police staff member since 2005 in the vetting unit.

Her astounding commitment earned her runner-up for the Women in Policing ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2019.

Commissioner Pays Tribute

“There are very few people who have served London for over 50 years and I am extremely proud of Maggie’s achievements,” said Commissioner Cressida Dick.

“She started at the Met when policewomen were a novelty and has overcome every barrier thrown her way. Maggie is a vital expert in vetting, valued by all for her knowledge and good humour. Her passion for first aid training is remarkable. She’s a true role model.”

Maggie herself said: “If you’d asked me at 19 if I’d still be here at 70, I’d have said no. But here I am! I haven’t loved every minute… just most of them. It was an honour to meet the Commissioner and share some stories.”

London’s finest salute Maggie Price – a policing powerhouse and living legend at New Scotland Yard.
