Mother and Baby Narrowly Missed by Falling Wall in West Hampstead Collapse
12-Foot Masonry Crashes Down
A 12-foot section of masonry between two Victorian buildings partially collapsed at a West Hampstead junction on Monday morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene around 9:35 a.m. after the huge chunk of wall tumbled to the ground.
Terrifying Near Miss for Mother and Child
A passer-by described the moment a mother pushing a baby in a buggy was just inches from disaster. “It was a 12-foot piece of masonry between two sites that missed a mother pushing her baby in a buggy by inches,” they said. “We couldn’t tell if she was screaming in pain from the falling stone or from the shock. It could have been a disaster; it was a total freak accident.”
Aged and Unstable Victorian Buildings to Blame
The witness added: “These are Victorian buildings that are 120 years old. A pillar fell to the ground, narrowly missing a mother pushing a buggy. It’s just an elongated pillar with a newel post at the top that’s separated from the mortar and brick. It could have been a lot worse.”
Mother and Child Treated After Incident
An Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed crews attended and assessed an adult before taking them to a minor injuries unit. A police spokesperson said: “Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.” The mother and child are expected to make a full recovery.
