Mobility Scooter Causes Mayhem on Busy A13 as Man Follows Satnav Blindly
Drivers were left gobsmacked on Monday evening (June 30) when a man on a mobility scooter caused chaos by blindly following his satnav straight onto the fast-moving A13.
Slow-Moving Scooter Sparks Traffic Panic
The pensioner, clearly confused and relying on GPS, crawled along at a snail’s pace of just 3mph. His hazard lights flashed as he trundled past speeding lorries and cars, with crutches strapped to his scooter. The scene was tense as fast vehicles swerved to avoid him.
Emergency Services Step In to Avoid Disaster
Panic-stricken motorists dialled 999, prompting emergency services already dealing with a nearby vehicle fire to rush in. Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Roads and Transport Policing Command, caught between the fire and the scooter drama, managed to safely escort the man off the carriageway.
Footage shows the man riding calmly, seemingly unaware of the danger on one of London’s busiest roads.
Brief Road Closure and Warning to Satnav Users
The A13 was temporarily closed as police dealt with the incident. A Met Police source confirmed: “At around 9:40pm, the road was reopened.”
Drivers are urged to stay alert and not blindly trust satnavs — especially when vulnerable road users are involved.
