Boris Johnson Urges Britain to Stay Alert and Keep Lockdown Rules Tight
Nearly two months into lockdown, Boris Johnson has reminded the nation that the fight against coronavirus is far from over. He praised the public’s patience and sacrifices but warned against relaxing restrictions too soon.
Lockdown Saved Thousands – But The Virus Is Still a Deadly Threat
“This is the harshest restriction on freedom we’ve seen in peace or war,” Johnson said. Despite the toll on lives and livelihoods, lockdown measures prevented a catastrophe that could have claimed half a million lives in the UK.
Thanks to your effort, death rates and hospital admissions are falling, and the NHS has been protected. But Johnson stressed it would be “madness” to risk a second wave now.
Five Tests Must Be Met Before Lockdown Eases
The government’s reopening plan hinges on meeting five strict conditions:
- Sustained fall in death rates
- Sustained and significant drop in infection rates
- A reliable supply of PPE for health workers
- Control of the reproduction rate (R) below 1
- Protection of NHS capacity
A new Covid Alert System, with five levels from 1 (virus eliminated) to 5 (NHS overwhelmed), will guide the response. The UK is currently at Level 4, thanks to public sacrifice.
What Changes From Wednesday?
The PM announced a careful easing of rules starting this week:
- If you can’t work from home, you should now return to work, especially in sectors like construction and manufacturing.
- Avoid public transport where possible; walk, cycle, or drive instead to maintain social distancing.
- Outdoor exercise limits lifted – you can spend unlimited time outside, visit parks, and even play sports with household members only.
- Fines will be increased to clamp down on rule-breakers.
The Roadmap Ahead: Shops, Schools, and Hospitality
If conditions improve, step two could begin after the May half-term (from June 1), allowing phased reopening of shops and some primary school years (Reception, Year 1, Year 6) to return.
Boris hopes secondary school pupils with upcoming exams will get some classroom time before summer. Detailed safety guidance will follow for schools, shops, and transport.
Step three, earliest in July, could see hospitality venues reopening under strict safety measures – if data supports it.
Science and Caution Will Drive Every Move
Johnson stressed this plan is conditional and depends entirely on continued public cooperation to keep R below 1. He warned of new quarantine measures for travellers to prevent re-infection from abroad.
“We will monitor locally and nationally and aren’t afraid to put on the brakes if needed,” he said.
Reflecting on the country’s spirit, Johnson praised NHS workers, care staff, public service heroes, scientists, and everyday acts of kindness. “This plan will get us through the next phase – stronger, more resilient, and ready to rebuild.”
For now, stay alert, control the virus, save lives.
