Disabled Woman Forced to Crawl Up Stairs at Dalston Junction
Outrage erupted after Jennie Berry, 29, a disabled wheelchair user, had to crawl up a flight of stairs at Dalston Junction station in northeast London. The incident happened late Thursday night when the station’s lift was out of order.
Lift Broken for a Month, No Help in Sight
Ms Berry filmed herself shuffling up the steps on her bottom after finding no assistance upon arrival. To make matters worse, station staff were heard giggling as she struggled. With the lift out of use for a whole month and no signs warning passengers, she faced a gruelling climb alone.
She was trying to reach a hotel nearby when, despite the obvious need, no staff came to help until she was almost at the top. A staff member then joked about her reaction to the “repaired” lift, further upsetting her.
TfL Apologises, Promises Investigation
Ms Berry slammed Transport for London (TfL) for their poor handling of the situation. She called for urgent improvements in accessibility for disabled travellers.
Mark Evers, Chief Customer Officer at TfL, issued a formal apology and promised a thorough investigation to prevent such incidents from happening again. “We are committed to improving accessibility and ensuring out-of-service lifts are fixed promptly,” he said.
