M25 Chaos: Tanker Crash Closes Major Motorway Section
A serious collision between a tanker and a car has shut down a large stretch of the M25 clockwise between junctions 5 and 6. The crash happened Sunday evening and forced the closure of lanes 1, 2, and 3, leaving hundreds of drivers trapped for hours.
Emergency Services Swarm the Scene
Surrey Fire and Rescue, paramedics, and Surrey Roads officers rushed to the scene. A spillage from the tanker has been reported, but it’s unclear what substance leaked or whether it came from the tanker itself. Police are investigating the fatal crash.
A Surrey Fire spokeswoman confirmed multiple crews were sent but offered no further details. Highways England confirmed the full clockwise closure of Junction 5, including access from the A21 Sevenoaks and the M26 Junction 2a.
Traffic Gridlock and Driver Chaos
As of 1:16am, traffic officers began easing congestion, but some drivers took matters into their own hands. Several vehicles used the hard shoulder to escape the jam. Many remained trapped for over two and a half hours.
By 3:43am, lorries and cars were still stuck as police crash investigators conducted detailed examinations. Highways England officers performed welfare checks on stranded motorists to ensure safety.
Long Road to Recovery on the M25
Officials warn the closure could last several more hours while investigations continue. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and expect major delays.
