Fast-Thinking Staff Evacuate Hundreds as Fire Hits Institute
Quick Response Saves Lives
Staff at the Institute sprang into action to evacuate around 400 patients and 80 colleagues from a seven-floor building after a fire broke out. Thanks to their swift moves, no injuries were reported.
Roof Fire Contained
The blaze destroyed some roofing felt on the building’s first floor. Firefighters swiftly removed the damaged material, preventing the fire from spreading further inside.
Firefighters Praise Teamwork
Station Commander Brin Powell said: “The Institute’s staff got the patients and their colleagues out of the building very quickly and followed their procedures to keep everyone safe.”
Fire Under Control in Hours
The fire brigade was called at 12:46pm, with crews from Peckham, Brixton, Old Kent Road, and New Cross stations tackling the blaze. It was under control by 3:10pm. An incident command vehicle was on site.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
