Baby Born In Hospital Car Park Thanks to Security Team Heroics

A new mum gave birth in the car park of University Hospital Lewisham moments before reaching the maternity ward – with a surprise helping hand from hospital security staff.

The dramatic delivery happened on the morning of January 26, 2025, when Odia arrived at the hospital at 9:30 am with her partner, Obi. But before they could step through the doors, Odia’s labour kicked off fast — too fast for the maternity ward.

Security Guard Becomes Midwife in Emergency

Security officer Ade Oloye was patrolling nearby when he spotted the couple in distress. Obi explained Odia was in active labour and needed to reach the Lewisham Birth Centre urgently.

With no time to waste, Ade radioed for backup from site supervisor Mohammed Elamine Chabat. But within moments, it was clear the baby was coming right there and then.

With no medical staff immediately available, Ade put his security duties aside and helped deliver the baby girl in the chilly hospital car park.

Swift Delivery & Warm Welcomes

  • Baby girl, named Ocean, was born healthy with support from Ade and Obi.
  • Supervisor Mohammed arrived to find Ocean already cradled in her dad’s arms.
  • The security team wrapped mother and baby in blankets against the cold and kept them calm until medical staff arrived.
  • Both were then taken inside for checks and later discharged home together.

New Mum’s Heartfelt Thanks

“I gave birth in the hospital car park with no one around early that morning,” Odia recalled. “Luckily, Ade from security spotted us and jumped in to help. His care and quick actions made all the difference.”

“Thanks also to the other security guards and NHS workers who rushed to support us. Brilliant service all round.”

Security Team Proud of Their Role

“Being part of this amazing birth was intense and emotional,” said Ade.

“It showed us security staff do more than protect — we provide care and compassion when it matters most. It’s all in a day’s work.”

Supervisor Mohammed added, “We kept the mother calm, even joked that we were now midwives too! We’re proud to have helped bring baby Ocean safely into the world.”

Happy Ending for Baby Ocean

One month on, baby Ocean and her parents are thriving and eager to share their remarkable birth story.

The occasion highlights the vital role hospital security teams play — not just guarding the premises but stepping up with compassion and quick-thinking in unexpected moments.
