Peaceful Protests Pass Without Incident in Bournemouth and Weymouth
At around 1pm on Saturday, 3 April 2021, peaceful protests took place in The Square, Bournemouth, and Weymouth town centre. Police reported no public order issues during the events.
Police and Organisers Work Together Amid COVID Rules
Before the protests, officers worked closely with organisers to ensure the demonstrations complied with the latest COVID-19 laws. With updated regulations now allowing peaceful protests, organisers had to follow strict safety measures to prevent virus spread.
Dorset Police stressed the ongoing importance of public safety. “Protest policing is tough — especially during a pandemic,” said Superintendent Richard Bell.
Balancing Rights With Public Health
Police have a long tradition of protecting the right to protest while keeping communities safe. Superintendent Bell praised organisers and participants for following the rules. He explained,
“We have always sought to balance the rights of protestors with those of residents and businesses, while considering the risks of the virus.”
He added, “Coronavirus remains a deadly threat, and current laws aim to stop its spread. Officers are walking a fine line—upholding protest rights and enforcing COVID-19 restrictions to maintain community trust.”
Looking Ahead: Stay Safe as Restrictions Ease
As restrictions begin to lift in the coming months, Dorset Police urged the public to keep following safety rules. “We must not undo all the hard work so far,” Superintendent Bell warned.
