Newport Traffic Chaos as Sewage Main Collapses on Staplers Road
Traffic in Newport has come to a standstill after a sewage main collapse forced the total closure of Staplers Road this afternoon. Emergency works by Southern Water contractors were abruptly halted when the pipe gave way, causing raw sewage to flood newly dug trenches.
Emergency Sewage Cleanup Underway
The road shut instantly at the Barton crossroads by Cross Lane and School Lane. Two 36,000-litre tankers are pumping out hundreds of litres of sewage to stop the waste back-flowing into local drains and properties.
Emergency gully suckers have been deployed to clear the foul mess. But a source warns the closure could last longer, as the collapse may lie underneath the middle of the carriageway.
Major Disruption as Drivers Flout Road Closure Signs
The 2.5-inch main is a vital artery, serving hundreds of Newport homes. Despite clear “Road Closed” signs at Coppins Bridge, many drivers are ignoring them, making rush hour traffic even worse.
DTM Management has confirmed a full road closure, warning of severe delays for commuters heading home.
Experts Struggle to Locate Damage
Specialist drainage firm Dyno-rod has been called in with high-tech cameras to pinpoint the exact site of the collapse. However, thick scale and blockages are frustrating their efforts.
Sewage is reported to be backing up across Newport, affecting wastewater and sewage disposal for multiple households.
